“Five by Five” is an old expression used to communicate the signal-to-noise ratio in radio communications. Message clarity and volume are expressed with a simple 1-5 scale. This approach represents one of the early efforts to create a feedback loop into a communications process. A loud message can be unclear, and the clearest expression whispered can not be heard.
Establishing fidelity in engineering requires only that we understand, with high precision, where our teams and our systems lie in their lifecycle. Once we have established clarity in the message, we can initiate effective change.
